Ziller Soot Black is my go-to for projects like this watercolor map! I use Soot Black to write the calligraphy and make the illustrations first, then I paint over everything with watercolor. No smudging!

I only stock items in the TPK Supplies Shop that I love and use myself, and Ziller Soot Black ink is one of those supplies! It’s the most waterproof ink that I’ve ever come across, and that’s the reason I use it for all my projects that may come in contact with water. Here are some attributes of this ink:

  • It’s fantastic for projects that combine watercolor and calligraphy or illustration, like watercolor maps!
  • Since it’s totally waterproof, it’s ideal for creating envelope calligraphy in humid areas or places that tend to get a lot of rain.
  • This ink dries nice and matte, without any shine. Because of that, it tends to scan well.

This listing is for 1 fl. oz. of Ziller Soot Black ink. You should be able to use it straight out of the bottle; no need to transfer to a separate container! If the ink gets too thick, dilute it with distilled water.

    I am a beginner and I started with Sumi ink, but tonight I decided to try this ink that I purchased from Lindsey. Oh my, so smooth! Even though my technique leaves a lot to be desired, I did not have as much trouble with the nib snagging, or the ink skipping. The Sumi is nice, but I love this Ziller best.

    Awesome ink! It glides smoothly on paper and over paint, too. I absolutely LOOOOVE this ink!!!! It takes my calligraphy projects to a whole new level.
